I love this clip. For context it comes from a film, the Fountainhead, based on a novel by Ayn Rand. The plot is quite complex but in summary the ‘hero’ Howard Roark is an architect obsessed with design perfection who finds one of his designs has been altered against his wishes during construction. He is so incensed that he dynamites the building. The clip is his defence at the subsequent trial. It is a paen to individualism and the refusal to compromise. Life would be impossible if everyone if everyone followed his approach but it is probably true that it is the guiding spirit of radical innovation – whether in art, architecture, business or any other walk of life.
