I spent today at a seminar at Calumet in London, which was an introduction to studio lighting and portraiture. I felt rather out of place amongst a group of professional and semi-professional photographers and videographers but it was certainly interesting. It was the first time I had sought to get to grips with the principles and technicalities of lighting, an done of those sessions where you learn principally how much you don’t know.
And of course when your heading is swimming with technical questions, you rather lose sight of the purpose of the exercise. We had a practical session in the afternoon with a very patient model, Samantha, and it was too easy to let the challenge of taking a properly exposed picture get in the way of actually taking a good portrait of the subject. Anyway, I’ve posted two pictures which are about the only ones I regard as acceptable (or fair to the model!).
I would appreciate comments and advice.
