We headed out into the Atacama desert today and out first stop was to the see the Salar de Atacama, the huge expanse of short flats. I had for some reason expected these to be flat, smooth and white, and while they look flat and white from a distance they are certainly not smooth, as you can see from the pictures. They are however extraordinary in their scale and extent.
