Corcovado

Corcovado is a tall hill in the centre of Rio de Janeiro on top of which is the famous Art Deco statue of Christ the Redeemer. Visiting Corcovado is a ‘must see’ experience for any visitor to the Rio, though the inevitable result is long queues and severe over-crowding. And right now at least, the view of the statue is impeded by scaffolding.

It has to be said though that the statue of Christ is by some way the least interesting aspect of the visit. The behaviour of the crowds and the supporting sales of cult objects are infinitely more engaging. Can there be anything more revealing of human nature than the combination of a cult-like object and a selfie stick?
