The Source

Ingres appropriated Botticelli’s Venus, added a jar ever-running with water, gave her a particularly vacant expression and a profound title – The Source. Emboldened by the scenes of mass-appropriation at the V&A’s Botticelli Re-imagined exhibition I had no compunction working with my collaborator Paola Sammartino in appropriating it again, improving the expression, replacing water with flowers and setting the scene in a frame which is a further appropriation from an illustrated manuscript of the medieval or Renaissance period.

I know the result is a little kitsch and it is a one-off not a sign-post for my future work. But it gets a very positive reaction from whoever sees it.
