The Evangelistria Monastery

Skiathos-170917- 53

We dragged ourselves off the beach today to take a look at Skiathos and, in particular, some of its many monasteries and churches. The Evangelistria Monastery is actually quite late, founded at the end of the C18, but it is essentially timeless as it confirms in style to many Orthodox and Byzantine churches. It is famous primarily as the place where Greek freedom fighters agreed the design of the Greek flag in 1807.

Inside you would normally expect a church of this type to be covered in frescoes. But the walls here are largely plain; a deliberate decision apparently to use funds for supporting the people of Greece rather than adorning the building.

PS: I won’t tell you how long it took me to persuade the pigeon to pose in the right place.
