Rosy fingered dawn

Corfu 0295

A new translation of The Odyssey has just been produced, by Emily Watson. It was very well reviewed and I thought where better to read it than in Corfu. And very good it is too.

There are number of descriptive terms that occur repeatedly in The Odyssey. Dawn is always referred to as early and ‘rosy fingered’, and the sea as ‘wine dark’. It is quite difficult to capture that sense when sea and sky are as blue as they have been over the last week. But I got close on this early morning photograph.
