Canadian War Memorial, Agira

Sicily 0460Off the main road, we found ourselves by chance passing the Canadian War Memorial at Agira, where 490 Canadian soldiers are buried. These soldiers lost their lives in the successful invasion of Sicily in 1943. It was the first incursion of the Allies into Europe with a larger invasion force than Normandy. It led to the Italians overthrowing Mussolini  and to the subsequent fight through Italy.

Sicily 0458

Like every Commonwealth War Grave site I have ever seen it is beautifully positioned and lovingly maintained. It looks like it could have been completed yesterday. In the day when the political establishment in our country does little to make us proud, the Commonwealth War Graves Commission is certainly one institution that can hold its head high.
