Close to Noto has recently been discovered the remains of a major Roman villa from the C4 AD (The Villa Romana del Tellaro). There are about four major mosaics remaining of which one is a complex series of hunting scenes. Tucked in one corner we found a man gralloching a stag which he has hung by its legs from a tree. The dogs which presumably chased down the stag in the first place bark with excitement for their share of the spoils. Behind them is a man carrying a pitcher with fire blazing from the side. This might be to help in sealing the prepared carcass or perhaps to light a fore on which it will be cooked.
Everyday life for a Roman landowner!
