I had a fascinating and enjoyable day last week, photographing two more Polish artists living and working in the UK; a painter and a clothes designer. Hopefully I publish their pictures here shortly. As usual I was introduced to these artists by Maja Szymczyk, a singer songwriter who I featured in this series here.
When I first started the series, my intention was to counter the normal stereotypes about immigrants in general and Poles in particular, by highlighting the contribution which this group is making to the cultural life of this country. And this remains my primary purpose. But as I talk to more people in researching and taking these photographs, I am also gaining a deeper understanding of just how brave and committed people most be, and how hard they have to work, to make a success of life in a new country. I am full of admiration for those who succeed.
